Stockholm Sweden

Stockholm is the capital of the Scandinavian country of Sweden, and comprises fourteen islands connected with nearly fifty bridges on Lake Mälaren. This empties into the Baltic Sea, flowing past an archipelago containing 24,000 islands.

Stockholm is cosmopolitan, possessing both modern Scandinavian architecture with gleaming metal, as well as medieval towers, a quaint Old Town (Gamla Stan) and lots of parks. At least 30% of the city comprises waterways and a further 30% is made up of parks, making this the greenest and most breathable European capital city.

The city's sights are primarily located in the "innerstaden", or inner city, one of the city's three districts and at one time the zone inside the city toll gates. The mainland to the north of the Gamla Stan, containing Norrmalm, Vasastan and Östermalm, forms one district, then the Gamla Stan island and larger Södermalm form a second, and finally Kungsholmen island forms a separate district to the west.

Outside the central city, typically suburban buildings are to be found and then a particularly charming countryside.
